The Children’s Department is currently under construction!
Until construction is complete, the department is closed to the public.
Browsable books and materials are available across from the Circulation desk. A Children’s staff member will be outside the department as well to retrieve items that are in the closed area.

The North Shelby Library is open for regular operation and most of our programs have returned to being in person at the library. However, the Children’s department does still occasionally offer kits-to-go and distanced/outdoor or hybrid programs. Please review our online calendar here for more detailed information and registration or call 439-5504.
In addition to programs, here is an overview of some of our offerings and services in the Children’s Department:
Activity Bundles and Circulating Kits: We’ve now have Activity Bundles for check outs! Each bundle will come with a book and printable activity sheets. Keep the activity sheets and return the book! We’ll have different themes each month! Bundles are designed for children PreK through 1st Grade. We also have kits available for check out. These kits include School Readiness material, sensory items, puppets, and puzzles. Email nschildrens@shelbycounty-al.org or call 439-5504 to request a bundle!
Read Your Way Through Pre-K: North Shelby Library’s Read Your Way Through Pre-K is an early literacy program. It’s never too early to read to your child(ren)! Early literacy is crucial for future success, and the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten provides an encouraging and paced challenge for young children and their families. To register for this program, stop by the Children’s Department or call 439-5504.
Please note: This program is transitioning from our previous early literacy program, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. If you were still participating in our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program online, please stop by the Children’s Department or call 439-5504 for more information.
Tween Leadership Council: For ages 8-12! The NSL Children’s Department is forming a Tween Leadership Council so our tweens can help us develop programs that they want to have! YouTube Channel: Please subscribe to our YouTube Channel! We upload fun content such as storytimes, craft ideas, book talks and more.
